How about a WGP fieldtrip?

Sunset Hills Farm breeds, boards and sells Peruvian alpacas as well as alpaca yarn and related gifts on their lovely acreage in Butler, PA.  The farm offers one-hour visitor tours for $8.00 per person.  A yarn and gift shop is located on-site as well.  From one who's been there, the farm is beautiful and the critters are mighty cute... just watch where you step.  The Guild would like to arrange for a Saturday summer field trip if enough members are interested. If you'd like to go, email Leslie Mitchell.  Visit the farm online. <click link>

Remember this is YOUR guild!  If you have ideas/suggestions for meetings or something you want published in the newsletter, send an email to Nancy Bishop.

April 2008 Sample Weaving Recap

Weavers Guild of Pittsburgh members continue to gain valuable weaving patterns.  Several members also showed off their weavings done at home, including Norma Mierzwa's beautiful chenille and bamboo scarf, Marty Carrier's five-foot sampler woven on her rigid heddle loom, and Ann Windish's wonderful and amazing tote bags woven from recycled plastic bags.

Happenings

The Waynesburg Sheep and Fiber Fest will be held in downtown Waynesburg, PA on Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18, offeringexhibits, crafts, other activities and live entertainment, as well as sheep-shearing and hearding demonstrations.  Visit online at www.sheepand fiber.com take it from one who has attended... this small festival is in its infancy but seems to be gaining ground.  Wear a good sun hat and take bottled water.

Convergence, the Handweavers Guild of America convention, will be held in Tampa, FL on June 22-28, offering numerous workshop, exhibits and vendors.  Visit their website for more info.

Gorilla Day at the Pittsburgh Zoo!... this event ties into weaving HOW your ask?  In addition to offering fun and educational activities about gorillas and their environment, crafts will be sold, made by artisans living in gorilla range areas (Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo).  Representing these artisans will be the Columbus Zoo's Partners in Conservation (PIC)project.  PIC buys the crafts at fair prices, sells them in the United States and channels the funds into programs benefitting both conservation and humanitarian projects.

Gorilla Day is scheduled for Sunday, July 20th from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. and is free with general admission.  The zoo is hoping to find local basket weavers to demonstrate their skills and possibly to offer visitors interactive learning experiences.  The zoo's website lists such activities as gorilla themed craft-making, African storytelling and drumming and meeting the gorilla keepers, a group that includes the Guild's own Roseann Giambro.

For more details about this special event, visit the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium online.  Learn more about Partners in Conservation online, also.
